Right in the heart of Kristiansand lies a peaceful, sculptural park that offers both artistic depth and photographic inspiration. Nupenparken — also known as Otterdalsparken — is home to one of Norway’s largest fountain installations, created by renowned artist Kjell Nupen.
It’s a place where water flows continuously over stone and steel, surrounded by greenery and soft light. And for those with a camera, especially during calm evenings or overcast days, it becomes a perfect location to experiment with long exposure photography.
A Park Full of Stories
Otterdalsparken was transformed in the early 2000s when artist Kjell Nupen designed and installed the sculptural fountain system that now defines the space. The park is sometimes called “Nupenparken” by locals, a tribute to the artist’s deep connection to Kristiansand and his lasting contribution to the public art scene.
The installation consists of several geometric stone and metal structures, with water cascading, bubbling, and misting around them — constantly in motion, yet harmoniously integrated into the landscape.
It’s not just a visual experience — it’s a space for reflection, both literally and emotionally.
Long Exposure at the Fountain
The Nupen Fountain offers a rare opportunity to capture motion and stillness in the same frame. Using long shutter speeds, the flowing water transforms into soft veils and mist, contrasting with the hard lines of the stone structures.
In the right conditions, it feels almost surreal.
Here’s why it works so well for long exposure:
- Multiple water textures: smooth cascades, sharp jets, and gentle streams all in one space
- Architectural contrast: the solid, clean structures frame the motion beautifully
- Consistent water flow: ideal for experimenting without waiting for waves or wind
- Ambient lighting: great in soft daylight, twilight, or even under artificial lighting after dark
Tips for Shooting in Nupenparken
- Bring an ND filter to extend your shutter speed during the day
- Use a tripod and remote trigger (or timer) to keep everything sharp except the water
- Aim for shutter speeds between 1–10 seconds depending on the look you want
- Overcast skies or blue hour give the most balanced, moody results
- Watch out for reflections — they can either enhance or distract depending on composition
