Set right at the water’s edge in Kristiansand, Kilden Performing Arts Centre is more than just a cultural venue — it’s a landmark. With its bold architectural design, flowing wooden facade, and stunning reflections over the fjord, Kilden is a dream location for photographers, especially during sunset and golden hour.

This evening, with my tripod set up and the light softening, I spent some time capturing the stillness, motion, and warm tones using long exposure techniques.

A Stage for the City

Opened in 2012, Kilden Teater og Konserthus is home to four key institutions:

  • Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra
  • Agder Teater
  • Opera Sør
  • And a wide range of visiting performances and concerts

Designed by the Finnish firm ALA Architects, Kilden is known for its iconic wave-like oak facade, which curves outward over the entrance like a sculptural curtain. It’s a space built for sound and experience — but also one that’s visually striking, especially when set against the shifting colors of the sky and sea.

Golden Hour & Long Exposure

Kilden faces west, which makes it perfectly aligned for sunset photography. As the sun drops behind the fjord, it paints the sky in soft golds and purples — and when captured with a long shutter, the light and reflections take on a smooth, almost cinematic quality.

The wooden curves glow warmly, while the glass façade mirrors the surroundings, offering incredible depth and symmetry.

Why it’s great for long exposure photography:

  • Glass, wood, and water create rich visual contrasts
  • Long exposures smooth out the water and stretch reflections beautifully
  • Architectural lines give strong composition anchors
  • Light changes rapidly in golden hour — offering multiple moods in a short time
  • Clean, open foregrounds make it easy to set up with a tripod

Tips for Shooting at Kilden

  • Use a tripod and ND filter to stretch exposures into the 1–10 second range
  • Shoot just before and after sunset — the colors are most intense then
  • Explore from different angles — the boardwalk, waterline, and side paths all offer unique views
  • Include the waterfront for reflection shots, or go in close to abstract the curves and textures
  • After dark, the building is lit subtly, and longer exposures can create stunning night compositions

📍 Where It Is

Kilden is located right at the edge of Kristiansand’s harbor — just a short walk from Bystranda, the ferry terminal, and the city center.
