Right in the center of Kristiansand, where the canal meets the sea, lies Fiskebrygga — a vibrant and colorful harbor promenade that blends maritime tradition with modern city life.
Known for its lively atmosphere, fantastic restaurants, and canal-side charm, Fiskebrygga is also a wonderful location for photographers, especially during golden hour when the sun sets behind the rooftops and the water turns to glass.

This evening, I set up my tripod and let the light and long exposure do the storytelling.

A Bit of History

Fiskebrygga, which literally means «The Fish Wharf,» was once Kristiansand’s central point for the fish trade. It has since been thoughtfully redeveloped into a modern harbor area — maintaining its historical style with wooden buildings, bright colors, and canal walkways, while becoming a key destination for dining, shopping, and summer events.

Today, it serves as a beloved social hub for locals and tourists alike — especially on warm evenings when the restaurants open their terraces and boats glide quietly through the canal.

Long Exposure at Golden Hour

As the sun dipped behind the buildings, the last warm light hit the façades along the canal, and the scene turned into a painterly mix of reflections and color.
With a long shutter, I was able to smooth out the water, stretch the light, and bring out the contrast between old-world texture and modern life.

What makes Fiskebrygga ideal for photography:

  • West-facing canal = perfect for sunset light
  • Water reflections create soft, mirror-like surfaces
  • Wooden architecture in vivid colors adds strong visual structure
  • Boats and pedestrians offer motion blur opportunities
  • Cozy lighting from cafés and lanterns enhances the mood after sunset

Don’t Miss the Food

While you’re there — camera or not — make sure to stop by one of Fiskebrygga’s excellent restaurants. A few favorites include:

  • 🦐 Hos Moi – Elegant dishes with a view over the water
  • 🐟 Hos Naboen – Live music, local seafood, and warm ambiance
  • 🍷 Sjøhuset – One of the best places in town for a high-end meal with a maritime feel
  • 🍤 Pieder Ro – A casual spot known for its outdoor seating and summer vibes

It’s the kind of place where you can take photos, eat well, and enjoy the sound of the sea — all without leaving the city center.

📍 Where It Is

Fiskebrygga is located right in Kristiansand sentrum, just a few minutes’ walk from the main square and the ferry terminal.
